High temperatures are inevitable at this time of year, especially when natural phenomena like heatwaves or the canícula arrive. For safety, it’s best to stay indoors during the hottest hours of the day to avoid harsh UV rays and physical consequences like heatstroke or sunstroke.
However, our home can also become very hot. Running the air conditioner all day isn’t a viable option, so here we’ll recommend some adjustments to keep your home cooler and more comfortable, while also saving energy.
Ventilate during the coolest hours

This is the simplest option and can make a big difference. In the early morning, open opposite windows and doors to let in the cooler air. Likewise, close curtains and blinds during the hottest hours, and keep windows partially open, or close them to trap the cool air inside.
Reduce heat sources

Appliances and other electronics like TVs and light bulbs emit a lot of heat. We recommend switching your bulbs to LED lights, which emit less heat and are energy efficient. During the hottest hours, avoid using appliances that generate a lot of heat, such as the oven, iron, or dryer.
Choose a thermal waterproofing solution

Waterproofing is an important protective layer for our home against humidity and to prevent leaks during the rainy season. However, it also acts as a barrier to heat transfer*1, and in general, waterproofing protects the structure and increases the lifespan of the property*2.
Add plants that absorb heat

Abundant greenery always brings benefits to the home, and it’s also excellent decoration. In this case, there are plants known for effectively absorbing heat indoors, for example:
- Snake plant
- Areca palm
- Pothos
- Ferns
